Don obtained his undergraduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan Tech in 1959 and went on to earn M.S. and PhD degrees in Materials Science from Northwestern University in 1961 and 1964, respectively.

Appointed Assistant Professor at Michigan Tech in fall of 1963 and retired as Professor in June of 2000. Emeritus status was granted in August of 2000.

Retains rank of Research Professor at Michigan Tech and remains on the graduate faculty, advising graduate student, Edward Laitila.

Don and his wife, Sharon, reside at their home on Pike Lake Road in Toivola, MI.
