Wayne Bergstrom

- BS Civil Engineering 1976
Wayne earned his BSCE from Michigan Tech in 1976 and went on to earn an MSCE from Purdue University in 1977 and a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1989. In more than 45 years of civil/geotechnical engineering practice, he has held various roles in consulting, industry, and governmental service and has helped to adapt civil infrastructure projects to a wide range of geologic environments on 6 continents. These projects have ranged from transportation infrastructure and power plants to shoreline structures, dams, and brownfield cleanup. Registered as a professional engineer in 7 states, he is also board certified as a Diplomate of Geotechnical Engineering.
He is currently a Principal Engineer at Bechtel Infrastructure and Power. He was selected as a Bechtel Distinguished Engineer in 2013 and a Bechtel Fellow in 2020.
He has been active for many years in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), having chaired several of its national education-related committees as well as the Power Systems Committee of its Energy Division. Wayne also served in various ABET accreditation roles over a period of 25 years, culminating in his election as the 2016-17 President of ABET, Inc., which accredits some 4,000 college programs in engineering and related scientific/technical fields in more than 30 countries around the world.
Wayne was the recipient of the 2005 Michigan Technological University CEE Department Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his prior service as CEEPAC Chair. He is also a prior recipient of the ASCE Excellence in Civil Engineering Education Leadership Award, as well as the Glen L. Martin Practitioner Service Award of the Civil Engineering Division of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). He was named an ASCE Fellow in 2008 and an ABET Fellow in 2020.
