Individual Counseling

The Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being provides individual counseling to all enrolled, degree-seeking Michigan Tech students. The Center utilizes a brief, goal-oriented approach to services to assist students in developing a treatment plan that utilizes the least intensive, most effective option to meet their needs.

All students interested in individual counseling can meet with a counselor for an initial consultation appointment to discuss their mental health concerns and which options best meet their needs. Check out our individual counseling page for additional details and our initial appointment guide on what to expect during your initial consultation appointment.

TELUS Health

The Center has a partnership with TELUS Health to provide Michigan Tech students with free 24/7 access to tele-mental health services. Students can use the TELUS Health Student Support App to access counseling or crisis support anytime, anywhere. Students have the option to customize their experience with preferred methods of communication (chat, phone, or video), and options for multilingual, identity, and cultural matching support.

Individual counseling appointments are also available upon request. Students must contact TELUS Health via phone to request an appointment.

Medication Management

The Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being provides limited access to a nurse practitioner, who is able to prescribe and manage psychiatric medication. A student must be referred to the nurse practitioner by a counselor at the Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being. Medication works best in conjunction with psychotherapy. Check out our frequently asked questions for additional details.

Note: the nurse practitioner does not prescribe or manage ADHD medications.

Support & Therapy Groups

During the academic year, the Center offers support and therapy groups to Michigan Tech students. Groups can be attended with or without participation in individual therapy (check the brochure to see if a referral is required to participate). Group therapy can be an effective form of treatment for various reasons, including receiving support from others with a similar concern, learning more about the topic through group education, helping to feel not alone, and providing support to others in the group.

If you would like to join a group we would love to have you! All individuals are encouraged to seek out groups that might help to meet their individual needs and build community. Please check out our brochure to see if there is a group that fits your needs.
