Thank you for your interest in Michigan Tech's Counseling Services. We know that your decision about an internship is an important one. Choosing an internship can be a difficult decision that can have an impact on your professional identity and future practice. With that in mind we would like to share with you as much information as possible to assist you in making a choice that is best for you.
Counseling Service's staff are trained in a wide range of theoretical perspectives and models that meet the needs of the university student population. The staff at Counseling Services provide one-on-one, couples and group counseling on a wide scope of issues. The goal of Counseling Services is to provide support to students, which will help them achieve their academic and personal potential.
While completing your internship at Counseling Services you will have the opportunity to observe the different techniques that various counselors utilize. Once you have had the ability to shadow different clinicians, you will have the chance to build your own case load of students and begin gaining experience with one-on-one counseling. In addition to counseling you will have the opportunity to work on different projects or activities that are either ongoing or suggested by you. These activities or projects will enhance your experience and further your learning. Interns will also have weekly supervision with a licensed clinician, who will be monitoring their work and progress.
Individuals seeking an internship through Counseling Services must be in a master's degree program or higher and be completing their final internship. We accept individuals from programs including licensed professional counselors, masters in counseling, masters of social work, or from a related accredited counseling program. Internships are available for both the academic year and summer, but space is limited.
