Thank you for supporting your student’s involvement with Michigan History Day—District 1. The National History Day program offers students great opportunities not only to learn about history but also gain the skills to understand the world around them with a more analytical eye. They ask questions about the past, make connections with today, and are inspired to become the leaders of tomorrow.
How to Support Your Student
- Help Students Facilitate Their Projects
- NHD projects are a big commitment for students and have several different parts that will be completed over the course of the year. To support your students, check in with them on their progress and due dates.
- Restrictions on Outside Involvement
- NHD projects must be student-created at every step, meaning that use of AI is prohibited and students may not accept help to write, design, or create any section of their project.
Financial Info
- Travel Costs- Travel costs may include transportation, hotel & food. Some school districts will compensate parents for some of these costs, but may not, so it is best to communicate with the sponsoring teacher and school. These costs may incur at the regional level (usually just transportation & food depending on distance), state level and national level. Many schools will provide transportation at the Regional level as well.
- Registration Costs
- Teachers will be in communication regarding registration deadlines & requirements.
- Free for regional competition
(Is there a registration fee for Tech competition?) - $35/student for state competition in 2026, fees may vary from year to year
- $160/student & $65/teacher for national competition, fees may vary from year to year.
- Some schools may cover the registration fees at the different levels, but make sure to communicate with the sponsoring teacher and school about this.
