Shipping and Receiving

Shipping Items for Move-In

If you will be shipping belongings, be sure to make arrangements well in advance but not so that items arrive before you do.  Shipping boxes will likely be left outside your door.

If you are using a storage container or moving truck that does not fit in a parking stall please contact Residential Living Office before it arrives so we can inform you of approved parking locations.

Mailbox Keys

Each apartment contract holder receives one mailbox key at check-in, which must be returned to Housing at check-out. If the key is lost, a $100 replacement fee will be assessed. Once the contract holder moves out and returns the key, they must coordinate directly with the Houghton Post Office to retrieve any mail delivered afterward, as Housing personnel are not permitted to access the mailboxes or reissue the key.

Receiving Packages in the Mail

Daniell Heights residents who receive large or oversized packages can pick up their packages at the package lockers, which are located just below the Daniell Heights mailboxes. Residents who receive packages will be provided with a key in their mailboxes, which they can use to unlock the package locker that matches the number found on the key. Keys to open the package lockers are one-time use and will remain in the lock after the student retrieves their package. Please follow the steps in the tutorial video to retrieve your large or oversized packages.

To learn how to use the package lockers, view our tutorial.

Renter's Insurance

Neither Michigan Technological University nor the Division of Residential Living is liable if your property is lost, stolen, or damaged in any way, anywhere on the premises (including storage facilities).

Residents are liable for all damages to their apartments and belongings, and to neighbors' apartments and belongings that occur due to their or their guests' actions. Renter's Insurance protects you from financial loss if there is a fire, leak, or flood in your apartment. We highly recommend you purchase renters' insurance.

Most renters ' insurance policies do not cover protection from flooding unless you specifically request a "rider"  or addendum to the policy.

For a list of Renter Insurance providers in our area, here's an easy guide.

The Daniell Heights Permit must be hung from the rearview mirror with the color and number visible and must be displayed at all times, as Daniell Heights areas are strictly enforced 24/7.

Your permit is only valid for the vehicle(s) registered with the university and cannot be transferred to others. If you change your vehicle, please email the new registration (including make and color) to parking@mtu.edu.

While a parking space is guaranteed, spots within each block are first-come, first-served for permit holders, with contract holders receiving first preference.
