Residence Education Coordinator Experience
Residence Education Coordinators at Michigan Technological University supervise student staff and take care of the day-to-day operations of the residence halls, but Residence Education Coordinators do much more than the average hall director. These professionals are instrumental in developing and implementing our residential learning model by applying their expertise in creation of learning frameworks in the residence halls. This empowers our RAs to focus on supporting our students and building community. Residence Education Coordinators use their knowledge and experience to create a learning environment encouraging personal growth and skill development in the students they serve.
The eight RECs are educators, advisors, and mentors; collaborate with other departments on initiatives; assist with committee work; and learn through professional development. We direct special projects and supervise summer interns. The REC experience will truly help you gain a students-first perspective as you develop skills to become a leader in the field of higher education.

On a campus that is bound together by snow and STEM, Michigan Tech is located on the south shore of Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. The area includes an abundance of hiking trails, outdoor recreational pursuits, winter sports, waterfalls, and breathtaking views. Popular winter activities include snowshoeing, skiing, snowmobiling, snowboarding, and ice fishing.
Residence Education Coordinators develop personal, meaningful relationships while supervising their resident assistants and advising student organizations. This is achieved through developing training programs, leading weekly staff meetings, joining Broomball teams, and supporting student events.
Residence Education Coordinators stay connected in the midwest with regional committee work. Professional staff members are also encouraged to participate in other development opportunities such as:
- Mental Health First Aid
- Search Committee Training
- Attending conferences
Required Training
Every employee at Michigan Technological University will receive the following required trainings; additional training may be required by the department.
