Engineer the Systems That Keep Power Moving

What happens when demand suddenly changes, a fault disrupts the grid, or a new source of electricity is added to the power system? Electric power engineers step in. Electric power engineering is the branch of electrical engineering concerned with generating, transmitting, distributing, converting, and managing electrical energy. As electricity demand changes and new energy sources are integrated into the grid, engineers must design, analyze, and operate increasingly complex power systems.

Michigan Tech's Advanced Electric Power Engineering Graduate Certificate, offered both online and on campus, provides advanced knowledge of electric power system operation and design. Developed in consultation with electric utilities, the program addresses the continuing educational needs of engineers working in the power and energy sector.

Who is this Certificate For?

This certificate is designed for electrical engineers and professionals in closely related fields who want to expand their knowledge of electric power engineering. It's also a good fit for graduate students seeking specialized study in power engineering or practicing engineers preparing for additional responsibilities in the power and energy sector.

What You Need to Know

You'll begin with Advanced Methods in Power Systems (EE 5200), followed by electives covering specialized areas of electric power engineering. Available topics include power system protection, power electronics, electric machinery and drives, distribution engineering, computer modeling of power systems, wind power, and solar photovoltaic science and engineering. The program structure allows you to pursue advanced coursework aligned with your academic and professional interests.

Admissions

To enroll in this certificate program, students must have a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, or a degree in a closely related field with at least three years of experience working in the electric-power-engineering field. See complete admissions requirements.
