The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the City of Houghton are rebuilding 1.1 miles of US-41 from MacInnes Drive to Isle Royale Street. This construction work will at times affect the traffic flow into and out of campus. This project includes converting the four-lane road into two lanes with designated turn lanes at major intersections and widening College Avenue to add a center left-turn lane.

Facilities Management will share pertinent project announcements and traffic re-routing information as it becomes available.

Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to keep alert while in and around construction zones and to follow all appropriate directions and be aware of changing traffic patterns.

Construction Updates

August 10, 2021  →  Work is anticipated to be finishing later that initially projected.  The detour through campus along Cliff Drive will continue until the week of September 27th.

How will traffic be affected?

One-way detours are planned during each summer of the project (2021 and 2022). Traffic will be detoured several ways depending on the portion of the project being worked on.   See the Interactive Campus Map.   Select Stage 3 from the dropdown list to view changes in traffic flow, closed campus entrances, and closed parking lots.  Below are static screenshots of the changes you'll encounter in and around campus.

Stage 3 (July 28 - September) - Northbound traffic will be re-routed onto Cliff Drive. Southbound traffic will be shifted onto the new pavement on the northbound side of the highway.  Cliff Drive will remain two-way traffic.  All entrances to campus will be open.  Vehicles leaving campus via the Hubbell Street entrance near the MUB will only be able to turn left.  MacInnes and Cliff Drive entrances will operate normally.  Northbound vehicles wishing to access parking lots along US-41 will need to use Cliff Drive and loop back with southbound traffic to Hubbell or MacInnes entrances.
