The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the City of Houghton are rebuilding 1.1 miles of US-41 from MacInnes Drive to Isle Royale Street. This construction work will at times affect the traffic flow into and out of campus. This project includes converting the four-lane road into two lanes with designated turn lanes at major intersections and widening College Avenue to add a center left-turn lane.
MDOT will begin the 2022 work on College Avenue on May 2, 2022 with expected completion September 16, 2022. Construction will take place in two phases. Phase 1 will take place from May 2, 2022 to August 11, 2022. Facilities Management will share pertinent project announcements and traffic re-routing information as it becomes available.
Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to keep alert while in and around construction zones and to follow all appropriate directions and be aware of changing traffic patterns.
How will traffic be affected?
One-way detours are planned during each summer of the project (2021 and 2022). Traffic will be detoured several ways depending on the portion of the project being worked on. Summer 2021 work has been completed.
SUMMER 2022 work will not impact traffic flow on the Michigan Tech main campus, but rerouting will impact the normal traffic flow of College Avenue and could affect those coming to and leaving campus.
Phase 1 begins May 2, 2022. Changes in traffic flow during Phase 1 include:
- Southbound US-41 traffic will be detoured thru Sharon Avenue and MacInnes Drive.
- Northbound US-41 traffic will be maintained on College Avenue. This will be one lane traffic.
- No Southbound (heading to campus from downtown) traffic will be maintained on College Avenue during Phase 1.
