The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the City of Houghton are rebuilding 1.1 miles of US-41 from MacInnes Drive to Isle Royale Street. This construction work will at times affect the traffic flow into and out of campus. This project includes converting the four-lane road into two lanes with designated turn lanes at major intersections and widening College Avenue to add a center left-turn lane.
Staging of equipment begins May 3, 2021 with construction starting May 5, 2021. Facilities Management will share pertinent project announcements and traffic re-routing information as it becomes available.
Drivers and pedestrians are reminded to keep alert while in and around construction zones and to follow all appropriate directions and be aware of changing traffic patterns.
May 13, 2021 → Access into campus from the MacInnes Drive intersection is closed. Houghton Avenue south of the Library and Rekhi Hall has been made two-way. This will allow access to Lot 13 and metered parking.
May 11, 2021 → Stage 2 work will begin May 11, 2021. Work will take place in the northbound lanes. All traffic will be shifted to the southbound lanes from MacInnes Drive to Pearl Street. Cliff Drive West will be closed and will not have access to US-41. All traffic should use the east end of Cliff Drive (by the Rozsa Center) to access US-41. A detour is provided to allow vehicles to exit from College Avenue (between the Administration Building and Lot 1) to Cliff Drive. The main campus entrance at Hubbell Street will remain open along with MacInnes Drive.
How will traffic be affected?
One-way detours are planned during each summer of the project (2021 and 2022). Traffic will be detoured several ways depending on the portion of the project being worked on. The Cliff Drive detour is not expected to start until late June or early July, 2021. See the Interactive Campus Map. Select Stage 2, then select from the dropdown list to view changes in traffic flow, closed campus entrances, and closed parking lots. Below are static screenshots of the changes you'll encounter in and around campus.
Stage 2 (Mid-May to Late June) - There will be two-way traffic in the southbound lanes.
Campus Entrance at Cliff Drive is CLOSED
Parking lot in front of Administration Building is CLOSED
Campus access from MacInnes Drive is closed.
Traffic through campus should exit through Lot 1.
The University will regularly coordinate with MDOT and their contractor to provide relevant updates on the construction schedule.
