Thompson Working Families Scholarship Program Impacts 580 Students in Five Years at MTU

In the five years since the partnership between Michigan Technological University and the Michigan-based Thompson Foundation began, the number of Michigan Tech students participating in the Thompson Working Families Scholarship program has skyrocketed from four in the first cohort in fall 2020 to 460 in fall 2025. Since its inception, the program has impacted a total of 580 students as a result of student success and the Thompson Foundation’s corresponding increased support. The scholarship program was established by the Thompson Foundation in 2011 as a pilot program at Grand Valley State University. Ellen Thompson — a former teacher — along with her husband Bob Thompson, envisioned a scholarship program to help high-achieving students overcome financial barriers to higher education and prepare them for meaningful careers . . .

Michigan Technological University Earns ARM Endorsement

Michigan Technological University is proud to announce that the University has earned endorsement from the ARM (Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing) Institute. Michigan Technological University Joins National Effort to Demonstrate the Impact of Research Funding

Michigan Technological University has joined the Institute for Research on Innovation & Science (IRIS), a national consortium of leading research universities dedicated to using data to understand and demonstrate the public value of research investments. IRIS, housed at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, maintains an IRB-approved data repository to collect and analyze research expenditure data from its member institutions. This data is used to generate university-specific and aggregate reports that illustrate the economic and workforce impact of research funding. Through its membership, Michigan Tech will receive tailored reports showcasing how its research enterprise contributes to industries and regional economies, supports national and in-state vendors, and impacts the career trajectories of research staff and trainees.
