Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

Student education records are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) which is a federal law that protects the privacy of their records when a student reaches the age of 18 or enrolls at a postsecondary institution such as Michigan Tech. Students then have the right to determine who may have access to or receive information about them. Learn more about FERPA.

Banweb Guest Access at Michigan Tech

We recognize that parents, guardians, spouses and others are important in the success of our students and understand their need to guide, encourage, and be involved. The online Michigan Tech Guest Access system allows students to grant selected individuals access to their private student record information.

With the Guest Access System students make the determination as to what information they will make available and to whom, and they may grant or remove access to their education records at any time. Using the Guest Access system the student may grant access to any or all of the following information:

  • Electronic Bill notification
  • Tuition Bill and Associated Holds/Pay the Bill
  • Student's emergency contacts
  • Financial Aid information
  • Unofficial Academic Transcript
  • Midterm Grades (for first-year students only)
  • Term End Grades
  • Class Schedule by Day/Time and Course Detail

If students wish to authorize access, they may do so from the Banweb Guest Access. They will identify the guest (name/email address), and select the information that they would like to make available to the guest. The guest is sent instructions via email on how to establish their own secure University username and password. The guest will then complete the access registration by providing the University with the information necessary to set up their own secure account and the student is notified via email when this step is completed.

Student Bills

Students retrieve their bills and may make payments electronically through the Student Information System.

We cannot release the details of a student’s account to anyone other than the student due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) even though the parent, guardian, sponsor, or spouse may be paying the bill. Parents, guardians or spouses may request the student’s login information from the student to process the payment or share the payment information with the student who may enter it.
The tuition account is the responsibility of the student. If the student has a credit balance the refund is provided to the student, not to the person who paid the account.

Any collection action that may be required to collect the debit will reflect upon the student. Please refer to Student Billing for complete payment/billing information.

Student Grades Release

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) limits the information that the University can disclose about an adult student without the student’s permission. Students who are 18 years old or older are considered legal adults, therefore faculty and staff will not, as a general rule, discuss academic progress with parents, guardians, or financial supporters of students without the student’s permission. More information on FERPA can be found above or at the Registrar's Office.
