Design For Today--And Tomorrow
How do you design a product, process, or system that uses resources responsibly today while remaining effective when conditions change tomorrow? Engineers increasingly must consider not only performance and cost, but also environmental impacts, resource use, changing conditions, and long-term consequences.
Sustainability focuses on meeting current needs while considering environmental, economic, and societal impacts. On the other hand, resilience focuses on the ability of systems to withstand, adapt to, and recover from disruption. Themes of sustainability and resilience are gaining wide adoption in the companies who hire students from Michigan Tech. In fact, most companies employ sustainability professionals and report annually on sustainability performance; for example Ford Motor Company has a sustainability microsite. The World Business Council on Sustainable Development, which also emphasizes sustainability education, partners with major universities on education programs. Within the companies and organizations that hire our students, sustainability is helping to drive important decisions.

This certificate is designed for engineers who want to incorporate sustainability and resilience into their work, regardless of their discipline. It can help working professionals broaden their expertise and prepare for responsibilities involving sustainability, resource use, systems planning, or organizational decision-making.

What You Need to Know
Sustainability and resilience challenges rarely fit neatly within a single engineering discipline. This interdisciplinary, 9-credit certificate examines how engineering decisions interact with environmental, economic, and societal systems.
Study the development of sustainability and resilience concepts and learn to analyze systems using several approaches. Learn the origins of, and major advancements in, sustainable development, such as the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, systems analysis skills through application of environmental life cycle assessment (LCA).
You’ll also examine major sustainability challenges—including climate change, material use, and the circular economy—and consider how engineering, policy, and collective action can contribute to solutions.
