Explore the Interaction of Light and Matter

From fiber-optic communications and advanced imaging to optical sensors and quantum technologies, light plays a critical role in modern science and engineering. Optics is the study of how light behaves, travels, and interacts with matter. Photonics builds on these principles to develop technologies that generate, manipulate, transmit, and detect light. Together, these fields support advances in telecommunications, computing, imaging, and sensing.

Michigan Tech's on-campus Frontiers in Optics and Photonics Graduate Certificate provides a foundation in the physics of light and its technological applications. You'll develop specialized knowledge relevant to emerging fields such as integrated photonics, biophotonics, optical computing, and quantum technologies.

Who is This Certificate For?

This certificate is designed for qualified professionals and graduate students who want to deepen their knowledge of optics, photonics, and light-based technologies. It's particularly relevant to those interested in telecommunications, imaging, sensing, optical computing, and emerging quantum applications. The certificate can also complement graduate study in physics and related disciplines.

What You Need to Know

You'll study light and photonic materials, including how light travels through optical crystals and waveguides. Depending on your chosen courses, you can pursue additional study in electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, and Fourier optics. These subjects, which provide a deeper understanding of light and its behavior, support further study of optical and photonic systems.
