Reduce the Negative Impacts of Natural Disasters

Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions are examples of natural hazards—potentially damaging events or processes. Yet similar hazards can have very different consequences from one community to another. That is, infrastructure, social conditions, and preparedness all influence the severity of their impacts.

Disaster risk reduction examines both these natural hazards and the vulnerabilities of affected communities. It involves identifying risks, assessing potential consequences, and developing strategies to minimize damage and loss.

Michigan Tech's on-campus Natural Hazards and Disaster Risk Reduction Graduate Certificate combines geophysical science with social and cultural perspectives. You'll examine the causes and consequences of natural hazards while developing skills in hazard analysis, vulnerability assessment, and communication to help communities reduce disaster risks.

Who is This Certificate For?

This certificate is designed for students and professionals in geosciences, engineering, physical sciences, social sciences, and related disciplines who want to better understand natural hazards and their impacts on communities. It's also relevant to those interested in disaster risk reduction, hazard mitigation, and the social dimensions of environmental hazards.

What You Need to Know

You'll study geophysical and meteorological hazards alongside the social and cultural factors that influence their impacts. Coursework examines hazard analysis, vulnerability assessment, and strategies for reducing disaster risks. You'll also learn to develop hazard mitigation plans, use tools for hazard mapping, and communicate risks and recommendations to different audiences. Elective coursework provides opportunities for additional study in areas such as geospatial analysis, volcanology, and sustainable development.
