Power the Future of Mobility With IC Engine Expertise

From heavy-duty trucks and agricultural machinery to marine vessels and power generators, internal combustion engines remain essential to transportation and industry. These engines burn fuel within a combustion chamber, converting energy into mechanical power. Their performance depends on the interaction of combustion, thermodynamics, fuel and air systems, and engine controls.

Michigan Tech's online and on-campus Internal Combustion Engine Systems Graduate Certificate examines how these systems operate and how engineers evaluate engine performance, efficiency, and emissions. Through applied coursework and analysis, you'll develop specialized knowledge of engine technologies used across transportation, power generation, and industry.

Who is This Certificate For?

This certificate is designed for mechanical engineers and other qualified professionals working with engines, powertrains, testing, controls, emissions, and thermal systems. It's also a good fit for graduate students who seek advanced knowledge of internal combustion engines or who need an additional credential to complement their engineering education.

What You Need to Know

You'll study the thermodynamics and operation of internal combustion engines, including combustion processes, engine performance, air handling, fueling, and heat transfer. Coursework combines engineering theory with applied analysis, helping you evaluate trade-offs among power, fuel economy, emissions, durability, and cost. Depending on your electives, you may also study engine controls, testing and instrumentation, or exhaust aftertreatment.

Admissions

To enroll in this certificate program, students must have a degree in mechanical engineering or in a closely related technical field. Students with degrees in other fields may be required to take preparatory courses. See complete admissions requirements.
