Drive the Future of Hybrid Vehicle Technology

What happens when a conventional engine and an electric propulsion system work together to power a vehicle? Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) combine these technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Designing and optimizing these systems requires an understanding of how powertrain components interact, how energy moves through a vehicle, and how control systems influence performance.

Michigan Tech's Hybrid Electric Drive Vehicle Engineering Graduate Certificate, offered online and on campus, focuses on the design, analysis, control, calibration, and operation of hybrid and electric-drive vehicle systems. This interdisciplinary program, designed through partnerships with Argonne National Laboratory and numerous industrial partners (AVL, General Motors, Eaton, Horiba, MathWorks, and more), draws on mechanical, electrical, materials, and chemical engineering to provide advanced knowledge of vehicle propulsion technologies.

Who is This Certificate For?

This certificate is designed for engineers who want to expand their knowledge of hybrid electric vehicles, propulsion systems, and electric-drive technologies. It's particularly relevant to working professionals seeking advanced technical training in vehicle engineering, as well as graduate students interested in incorporating hybrid vehicle technologies into their studies. Applicants with backgrounds in mathematics or science may also qualify.

What You Need to Know

You'll study hybrid electric vehicle powertrains through advanced component analysis, modeling, and simulation. You'll examine power flows, energy consumption, system losses, and vehicle performance, along with methods for designing and calibrating propulsion systems. Depending on your choice of courses, you can pursue additional study in power electronics, electric machinery and drives, vehicle dynamics, and battery systems.

Use this certificate to build towards a Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis on hybrid electric drive vehicle engineering
