Design For Not Only Today But Also Tomorrow
How can engineers design products, processes, and systems that meet today's needs while remaining effective when conditions change? Sustainability considers environmental, economic, and societal impacts, while resilience focuses on the ability of systems to withstand, adapt to, and recover from disruption. Themes of sustainability and resilience are gaining wide adoption in the companies who hire students from Michigan Tech. In fact, most companies employ sustainability professionals and report annually on sustainability performance; for example Ford Motor Company has a sustainability microsite. The World Business Council on Sustainable Development, which also emphasizes sustainability education, partners with major universities on education programs.
Michigan Tech's Engineering Sustainability and Resilience Graduate Certificate, offered online and on campus, brings these perspectives together. You'll develop the knowledge and analytical skills to evaluate sustainability challenges and incorporate long-term considerations into engineering decisions.
Who is This Certificate For?
This certificate is designed for engineers and other technically oriented professionals who want to incorporate sustainability and resilience into their work. It's particularly relevant to those interested in energy use, resource management, environmental impacts, and systems planning. The program also complements graduate study for students seeking to apply sustainability principles within their disciplines.
What You Need to Know
Sustainability and resilience challenges rarely fit neatly within a single engineering discipline. This interdisciplinary, 9-credit certificate examines how engineering decisions interact with environmental, economic, and societal systems.
You'll study sustainable development, resilience, and systems analysis, including how environmental, economic, and societal considerations influence engineering decisions. Coursework covers environmental life cycle assessment (LCA), material flow analysis, techno-economic assessment, and other methods for evaluating complex systems. An elective allows you to pursue additional study in areas such as energy, natural resources, or sustainability policy.
Admissions
To enroll in this certificate program, students must have a bachelor's degree in any engineering discipline. See complete admissions requirements.
