Model Complex Systems in Motion and Change

What happens to a vehicle when it accelerates, turns, or encounters an uneven road? How do mechanical and electrical components interact inside a complex machine? Even something so common as human movement can be studied as a system whose behavior changes over time. Dynamic systems is the study of how interconnected parts respond to forces, inputs, and changing conditions. In this field, engineers use mathematical models and simulations to predict that behavior, test designs, and better understand complex mechanical and electromechanical systems.

Michigan Tech’s on-campus and online Dynamic Systems Graduate Certificate helps you build a foundation in analytical mechanics, mathematical modeling, and simulation. Develop skills for analyzing dynamic behavior and using computational models across mechanical engineering applications.

Who is This Certificate For?

This certificate is designed for mechanical engineers and professionals in related technical fields who want to deepen their knowledge of dynamic systems, mathematical modeling, and simulation. It's particularly relevant to those interested in vehicle dynamics, electromechanical systems, vibration analysis, and other complex engineering systems. The certificate can also complement graduate study for those seeking a concentration in dynamic systems.

What You Need to Know

You'll study intermediate dynamics and dynamic system simulation, using analytical mechanics and numerical methods to model and analyze complex systems. Coursework incorporates MATLAB, Simulink, and Simscape, with an emphasis on simulation accuracy and verification. Through individual and team exercises, you'll develop practical experience with model-based engineering while building knowledge in related areas such as vehicle dynamics, control systems, and vibration analysis.

Admissions

To enroll in this certificate program, students must have a mechanical Engineering or closely related technical field. Students with degrees in other fields may be required to take preparatory courses. See complete admissions requirements.
