Pooled Testing

COVID-19 testing is a crucial part of Michigan Tech's plan for fall 2020. The University's testing program has two main components — a strong baseline testing effort and ongoing surveillance testing. This strategy (see visual flowchart) relies on pooled testing that follows these simple steps:

Creating a Sample Pool

  1. A portion of your sample will be combined with portions of four other samples to create a sample pool.
  2. Surveillance testing is conducted.
    1. You do not need to quarantine while waiting for your results, unless you are symptomatic. Results can take approximately 36 hours.
  3. Results are received and communicated.

If COVID-19 is Not Detected in Your Sample Pool

If COVID-19 is Detected in Your Sample Pool

  • The five individuals within that pool are notified to quarantine while individual tests are run. Your roommate does not need to quarantine.
  • Each of the five samples are tested again individually. This can take approximately 24 hours.
  • Results are received and communicated.

If COVID-19 is Not Detected in Your Individual Sample

If COVID-19 is Detected in Your Individual Sample

  • Detected means that COVID-19 was present in your individual sample.
    • On-campus students: Housing will coordinate your move to an isolation space and your health care provider will follow up with you. Your roommate will need to quarantine for 14 days.
    • Off-campus students: Isolate in your home. The Dean of Students Office and your health care provider will follow up with you.
