Michigan Tech Hazing Policy Statement:
Michigan Technological University is concerned about the emotional, psychological, and physical health and well-being of its students and expects all students to be treated with equal care, concern, honor, and dignity.
Any form of hazing is unacceptable and is in direct conflict with institutional values and the rights and dignity of students, all of whom have the right to belong to groups without undergoing hazing or any risks of physical or emotional injury or humiliation as a right of entry to a student organization/group/team. Consent to hazing is never a defense to a violation of this policy.
What is Hazing?
Hazing includes various activities that may put students at physical risk or cause psychological harm through humiliating, intimidating, or degrading treatment of those seeking to join or remain part of a group, team, or organization. At Michigan Tech, we recognize that hazing can have serious, lasting consequences for our students and our community.
The effects of hazing extend far beyond the immediate incident and can significantly impact a student's academic success, mental health, and overall university experience. As a university committed to fostering an welcoming environment where all Huskies can thrive, we take a firm stance against any form of hazing behavior.
What Leadership Says About Hazing:
"At Michigan Tech, student safety and well-being is paramount. Hazing directly undermines our commitment to a safe and respectful community. It inflicts severe physical, emotional, and psychological harm, eroding trust and fostering fear instead of belonging. By actively preventing hazing and promoting a culture of safety, respect, and genuine connection, we build a stronger, healthier, and more supportive environment for everyone. We must hold ourselves accountable to the highest standards and uphold the values we've committed to as a community by preventing any form of hazing before it begins." - Kellie Raffaelli, Associate Vice President of Student Affairs & Dean of Students
"At Michigan Tech, the safety, health, and well-being of every student-athlete is a top priority. Hazing has no place in athletics - it directly contradicts the values of teamwork, discipline, and mutual respect that define our programs. Hazing undermines trust between teammates, and creates an atmosphere of fear rather than unity. Strong teams are built on trust, respect, and support - not intimidation or coercion. By rejecting hazing in all forms and fostering a culture rooted in integrity, accountability, and genuine connection, we not only protect each other - we elevate our teams and our entire University community. Let's commit to creating a positive, inclusive, and empowering athletic environment where every student-athlete can thrive." - Suzanne Sanregret, Vice President for Athletics and Recreation
"Every Husky wants to feel like they belong at Michigan Tech - they want to feel included, supported, and like they are part of something bigger than themselves. That desire should never come at the cost of humiliation, degradation, or discomfort. Hazing may not always seem black and white, so if you have questions, concerns, or hypotheticals, know that we are here to help guide you. We create a strong pack when we work together to support and uplift each other." Danielle Meirow, Director of Student Leadership and Involvement
