Online Teaching

Student studying with a laptop.

Whether you are designing a brand-new asynchronous course, seeking certification, or preparing for a quality review, the Center for Faculty Excellence can connect you with the policies, training, and support services needed to deliver quality online learning experiences.

Training and Certification

To teach online at MTU, instructors must complete our foundational badge courses or demonstrate equivalent prior experience. Refer to our Online Teaching Training and Certificate page for information on:

  • Current Michigan Tech policies about online teaching.
  • Information on how to register for upcoming badge training.
  • How to request a waiver.

Course Design and Development

Great online courses start with strong pedagogical foundations. The CFE provides resources and instructional design support to help you build or refresh your online course.

The Course Design and Development pages cover:

Course Review

Ensure your course meets MTU quality expectations before it goes live. Our online course review processes are designed to support your teaching, optimize student success, and maintain the brand integrity of our online courses and programs.

Online Exams

Protect the integrity of you online exams by following best practices and MTU's Policy on Online Course Examinations, which sets proctoring requirements.

Intellectual Property

Faculty own their scholarly works, but the University reserves the non-exclusive right to use them.

Unless special circumstances exist or other expectations are negotiated, developed learning objects should be made available to the University in some way.  Most commonly, this is done by simply using Michigan Tech systems such as the standard learning management system (currently Canvas), video archive system (currently Panopto), the digital commons, the campus computing network, etc.  Instructors, as owners of the content, are free to control the “timing and scope of access” to these works, as well as to use them in other ways.  Michigan Tech does set limits on use of its name, logos, seals or symbols, and requires written consent for their outside use.

Refer to Board of Trustees Policy 14.3,"Copyright Policy Regarding Scholarly, Academic and Artistic Works", for more information.
