What to Expect
The Center for Student Mental Health and Well-being provides individual counseling to all enrolled, degree-seeking Michigan Tech students. The Center utilizes a brief, goal-oriented approach to assist students in developing a treatment plan that utilizes the least intensive, most effective option to meet their needs.
All students interested in individual counseling can meet with a counselor for an initial consultation appointment to discuss their mental health concerns and which options best meet their needs.
How to Schedule Your First Appointment
If you have never utilized our services or if you have not met with a counselor during the current Academic Year, you may schedule an initial appointment in any of the following ways:
- In person at our Center located in Administration Building Room 301
- Over the phone by calling 906-487-2538
- By email at counseling@mtu.edu
- Online: Log in from a computer on the Michigan Tech campus network or off-campus through the Michigan Tech VPN to acquire a secure connection, then complete the online forms and appointment scheduler. (This link will only work while connected to the MTU campus network or through the Michigan Tech VPN.)
Once you've scheduled an appointment, you will need to arrive at least 5 minutes before your scheduled time at our Center in Room 301 of the Administration Building to complete an initial assessment questionnaire.
Schedule you first appointment online
What if I'm already established and would like to resume counseling?
If it has been more than 1 year since your last appointment, please schedule a First Appointment as outlined above.
If you have been seen within the past year, please contact us through email, phone, or in person to schedule.
Walk-In Appointments
Walk-in appointments are available for students seeking brief support for an immediate concern during our Walk-in Hours.
For immediate support outside of business hours, TELUS Health Student Support is available, or reach out to Emergency Services.
Single Session Therapy
As the end of a semester approaches and there is limited time for scheduling appointments, we utilize single session therapy to address mental health concerns. Beginning in Week 12 of each semester, students who schedule an initial appointment will be offered a single 50-minute therapy session that provides them with strategies to navigate a specific situation or goal. If you believe you need longer-term support, we can help guide you through the process of finding an external provider.
If you have already established counseling services through us within the current academic year, please utilize walk-in services for pressing mental health concerns during this time.
