Tips on Working with News Media

Michigan Tech faculty, staff, and students are often contacted by journalists seeking expert perspectives, research insights, and commentary on current events. University Marketing and Communications (UMC) also regularly connects reporters with university experts to support media interviews and story opportunities.

Getting Started

If you receive a media inquiry directly, or if a member of our team contacts you about a media opportunity, we encourage you to reach out to UMC for assistance.

Our team can help:

  • Coordinate interview requests
  • Provide background about the reporter or media outlet
  • Assist with scheduling
  • Help you prepare key messages
  • Provide interview preperation and guidance

Whether you receive an inquiry directly or through UMC, we're here to help make the process as smooth as possible.

Preparing for an Interview

A little preperation can help ensure your expertise is communicated clearly and accurately.

Before speaking with a reporter:

  • Understand the topic and purpose of the interview
  • Confirm the reporter's deadline
  • Identify two or three key points you want audiences to remember
  • Think about examples that help explain your work
  • Explain technical concepts in clear, accessible language

During the Interview

Remember that reporters are often looking for clear explanations and real-world context.

  • Speak clearly and conversationally
  • Focus on your key messages
  • Use examples and real-world applications
  • Remember: If you don't know an answer, it's okay to say so.
  • Remember that your comments may be quoted
