Sammy Borzick, is a full-time Recreational Specialist for the City of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, where she has worked since June 2023. In this role, she manages the Historic Eidem Farm and community engagement initiatives, developing and leading public programming centered on agriculture, food systems, and environmental education. Her work spans a wide range of community programs, from organizing seasonal events such as maple syruping and luminary snowshoe outings to managing a summer nature preschool and coordinating classes in beekeeping, organic gardening, and even goat yoga. Sammy also supports grant writing efforts and maintains community partnerships that promote organic agricultural practices and culturally relevant food production in one of Minnesota’s most diverse municipalities.

Sammy emphasizes how the knowledge and skills she gained through her coursework and co-curricular experiences at Michigan Tech have directly informed and supported the work she now does in community-based sustainability and environmental education. Courses in economic decision analysis and research methodologies prepared her for budgeting and surveying, while courses in food systems and sustainability science helped her frame the social and ecological dimensions of her work. Her engagement with the Sustainability Demonstration House and participation in research and internships—ranging from environmental education in the Minneapolis Conservation Corps to sustainability programming at a children’s museum in Virginia—allowed her to explore career pathways and build professional skills. Sammy also notes how her Spanish minor and international experience have been instrumental in working effectively within Brooklyn Park’s multilingual and multicultural community. Her career exemplifies the impact and versatility of a degree in sustainability within public service and community-based environmental work.

“I see a lot of job postings others with a Sustainability degree from Tech could apply for,” explains Sammy.  “Things like waste reduction specialists, city sustainability coordinators, naturalists, urban agriculture specialists, and positions with environmental health nonprofits, for example.”
