Summer Housing at Michigan Tech
Michigan Tech Residential Living offers summer housing for a variety of groups in Hillside Place. Whether you are planning a conference, camp, or family reunion, or attending Summer Orientation with your new student, we invite you to consider Michigan Tech for your summer housing needs.
Located in Houghton, Michigan, Michigan Tech sits at the heart of the scenic Keweenaw
Peninsula, just a few miles from Lake Superior. Rich in history and natural beauty,
the area offers many popular attractions, including the A. E. Seaman Mineral Museum,
historic mine sites, and countless outdoor recreation opportunities.
Reservations
Conference reservations must be coordinated by a designated conference coordinator. To check availability or request space, please fill out this form.
There is no fee to hold space for a future event or conference.
Space may be requested beginning in October for the following summer.
Reservations are available for dates between mid-May and July 31.
Group reservations require a minimum of four guests and a minimum stay of three nights.
Billing is assigned to the group’s designated conference coordinator during the reservation process.

Summer Orientation Rates
Rates for Summer Orientation families will differ from summer conference rates. Please visit our Summer Orientation Housing page for details.
Check-In and Check-Out
- Check-in: Housing Office, located at 153W in Wadsworth Hall (Monday-Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.) or Public Safety during evenings and weekends.
- Check-out: By noon on the final day of stay.

Summer Orientation Family Housing
Limited on-campus housing may be available for families of students attending Summer Orientation. These accommodations are offered with very limited amenities and differ from conference housing.
Reservations, policies, amenities, and deadlines are specific to Summer Orientation stays. Families are strongly encouraged to review all details before booking.

Comfortable Lodging Accommodations

Hillside Place
Hillside Place is a modern residence facility located on campus. Each fully-furnished suite includes:
- Four private bedrooms
- Two bathrooms (each with a shower)
- A living room
- A kitchenette with a stove, oven, refrigerator, and microwave
Each guest is assigned a private bedroom within a shared suite. Bedrooms include:
- One extra-long twin bed (lowered, not lofted)
- One dresser
- Wireless internet access
A maximum of four guests from the same group may be assigned to a single suite.
Guest Amenities and Services
Linens
Linen sets can be requested at the time of registration for Summer Conference guests. Linen sets include bedding, towels, washcloths, and toilet paper. No additional toiletries are provided. Linens are not provided for Summer Orientation.
Kitchen Supplies
Kitchen utensils, cookware, dishes, glassware, and silverware, are not provided. Guests are encouraged to bring their own items if they plan to use the kitchen space.
Internet Access
Guest wireless internet is available throughout campus.
- Connect to the MichiganTechGuest wireless network.
- Open a web browser and follow the on-screen instructions to accept the Terms of Service.

Dining
Meals within the residential dining hall are available for summer guests. Meals may be purchased in advance during the reservation process, or if not pre-arranged, meal passes may be purchased at the Dining Hall check in area.

Laundry Facilities
Laundry rooms are available on each floor. Guests must provide their own laundry detergent.

Fitness and Recreation
Guests may access the Student Development Complex (SDC), which includes fitness facilities, a pool, climbing wall, racquetball courts, and outdoor recreation areas. The Gates Tennis Center is also available. Hours and day-pass pricing are available by calling 906-487-2578 or visiting their website.
Meeting Rooms
On-campus guests may request the use of meeting rooms in Hillside Place at no additional charge. Requests should be made in advance by calling 906-487-2682 or emailing housing@mtu.edu.
Policies and Helpful Information
- Keys and Access: Key cards are issued to guests for building access. Guests must keep their card with them at all times. A $15 fee is charged per key card. The total number of key cards issued must be requested at time of reservation.
- Tobacco-Free Campus: Michigan Tech is a tobacco-, smoke-, and vapor-free campus.
- Alcohol Policy: Alcohol is not permitted in Hillside Place at any time.
Safety and Health Services
Michigan Tech’s Department of Public Safety and Police Services operates 24/7. In case of emergency, dial 911.
Local hospitals and clinics are located in Houghton and Hancock to support guest health needs.

Transportation and Parking
Parking permits are available for purchase at time of reservation. Additional passes may be purchased on campus through Transportation Services. Public transportation, taxi services, and airport access are available nearby. Guests needing vehicle assistance may contact Transportation Services at 906-487-1441 during normal business hours.

Downtown Houghton
Just minutes from campus, downtown Houghton offers easy access to local restaurants, cafes, shops, and everyday conveniences. Visitors can enjoy the town’s unique history and welcoming atmosphere throughout the beautiful Upper Peninsula summer.
Visit the waterfront, explore nearby museums, or browse the weekly Farmer’s Market and local shops for fresh produce, baked goods, and handcrafted items. Guests staying on campus will find plenty of opportunities to experience all that the area has to offer.

Visit the Keweenaw
For those looking to explore, a short drive up the peninsula leads to breathtaking views at Brockway Mountain Drive, the quaint area of Copper Harbor, McLain State Park, the historical Calumet Theater, Keweenaw Dark Sky Park, and more! Mid-summer visitors can also enjoy locally abundant thimbleberries, blueberries, and raspberries along the way.
Adventure seekers may enjoy touring the historic Quincy Mine, biking the region’s world-class trail system, chasing the Aurora along the shores of Lake Superior or the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park, or visiting the area's numerous waterfalls.
