Fire Safety

Cooking Safety

Cooking is the leading cause of campus housing fires, with 85% of university housing fires resulting from unattended cooking.

To stay safe:

  • Keep an eye on what you are cooking, especially when cooking at high temperatures
  • Never leave the kitchen while frying or grilling
  • Keep cooking areas clean and free of anything that can burn, especially towels, pot holders, etc.
  • Turn pot handles inward so as not to bump them inadvertently
  • If a fire starts in the microwave, keep the door closed and unplug the unit
  • Avoid cooking while sleepy or impaired

Other fire safety tips:

  • Evacuate immediately if an alarm sounds
  • Never use an extension cord with large appliances, like a refrigerator
  • Candles are not permitted in the apartments

Remember: Michigan Tech is a smoke-, vape-, and drug-free environment
