Stress Awareness

April Focus: Stress Awareness Month

April is Stress Awareness Month, a time to recognize and manage stress

for better mental and physical health. This year’s theme is Kindness for

Mental Wellness—small acts of kindness toward yourself and others can

make a meaningful difference.

Why It Matters

  • Chronic stress can impact both mental and physical health.
  • Open conversations help reduce stigma and connect people to support.
  • Learning simple coping strategies can improve daily well-being.

Common Signs of Stress

Emotional:

  • Feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or moody
  • Increased irritability and frustration
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions

Physical:

  • Headaches, muscle tension, or fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances or appetite changes
  • Digestive issues and rapid heartbeat

Behavioral:

  • Avoiding social interactions
  • Procrastination or decreased productivity
  • Increased reliance on unhealthy coping mechanisms (overeating, alcohol, etc.)

How Stress Impacts Long-Term Health

Chronic stress doesn’t just affect your mood; it can have serious long-term health consequences. Prolonged stress contributes to:

  • Cardiovascular problems – Increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke.
  • Weakened immune system – Making you more prone to infections and illnesses.
  • Digestive disorders – Stress can trigger symptoms of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), acid reflux, and stomach ulcers.
  • Mental health challenges – Chronic stress increases the likelihood of anxiety, depression, and burnout.

Ways to Manage Stress

  • Stay active: Exercise, spend time outdoors, or try yoga
  • Prioritize rest: Get enough sleep and stay hydrated
  • Set boundaries: Protect your time and energy
  • Practice self-care: Make time for activities you enjoy
