Solve engineering problems with an expanded understanding of materials.
If you are an engineer or a student interested in solid part manufacturing and design, Michigan Tech’s certificate in Fundamentals of Materials Engineering provides a basic understanding of the physical principles required to apply the Processing-Structure-Properties-Performance paradigm of the Material Science and Engineering (MSE) discipline.
Who is this certificate for?
This certificate is for qualified professionals who want to enhance their skill set and can be a foundation to continue toward a graduate degree. It is also valuable for degree-seeking students looking to develop a concentration that gives them an edge in their career path.
What you’ll learn.
You’ll understand the concepts for analyzing, designing, and controlling the development and optimization of materials applications, and be able to apply thermodynamic and kinetic principles to design the materials chemistry and manufacturing processes necessary to develop specific materials microstructures. You’ll benefit from world-class faculty, our highly advanced laboratories, and outstanding material processing facilities.
Besides developing skills and competencies in materials design and processing techniques, the curriculum builds skills in communication, project development, and literature review focused on real-world problems.
What you need to know.
- The certificate is a 10-credit program with one required course (Perspectives in Computation Materials Science).
- Three electives are required. Options include Thermodynamics, Kinetics I and II, Crystallography and Diffraction, and Mechanical Behavior of Materials.
