This 30-credit, coursework-based degree does not require specific courses or a thesis. Instead of following a single prescribed curriculum, students work with an advisor to select courses to create a customizable degree.

  • At least 18 credits of advisor-approved 5000 level or higher in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics.
  • Up to 12 credits of advisor-approved 4000 level courses.
  • Up to 12 credits from outside the ECE Department. These credits must be approved by the program director.

Online PhD applicants must have previously completed a master's degree in electrical and computer engineering or in a related discipline approved by the graduate program director. Students also work closely with a faculty research advisor to develop an individualized program combining advanced coursework, independent research, doctoral examinations, and a dissertation.

Each student's plan is tailored to their research interests while meeting Michigan Tech's rigorous doctoral requirements. Online and on-campus PhD students follow the same academic and research requirements.
