Join a student organization. Network. Be a leader. Michigan Tech has pre-health related student groups that offer more volunteer opportunities, and the ability to network and work with student peers with the same interests as you. We asked the student presidents to introduce you to each of their organizations:
AED is a pre-professional, pre-health honor society for students entering any health field. It provides support and educational opportunities to enhance the pre-health experience at Michigan Tech. With access to service projects, health-related group trips, and preparation for graduate school requirements, AED can help students achieve academic and professional success as they pursue a degree in health.
The MEDLIFE Michigan Tech chapter is part of an organization that works toward making medicine and education available to all, as well as developing safe homes and communities for low-income families in South America and Africa. Students in MEDLIFE fund-raise in order to volunteer for service learning trips, where they work with MEDLIFE staff and professionals to deliver medical care, education, and development to communities in Peru, Ecuador, Tanzania, and Nicaragua. MEDLIFE raises awareness of global health, education, and development during fund-raising, and also participates in multiple smaller volunteer events throughout the semesters.
Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society is an exclusive organization dedicated to promotion of research and academic excellence in the biological sciences. It organizes multiple events throughout the year, including the Medical/Graduate School Blitz and Biology Week, which helps students be aware of biological sciences and prepares them for further education. Since Phi Sigma is an exclusive organization, junior- and senior-status students who meet specific academic requirements are invited to be inducted.
The Pre-Health Association provides students with volunteer and community service opportunities needed for pre-health graduate school programs (medical school, dental school, vet school, physical therapy school, etc.). It has guest speakers throughout the year and puts on several large events including two blood drives and a five-week-long organ donation registration sign-up. PHAT also provides free CPR training every two years and has several smaller volunteer events.
