Educational Programming

Learning the names of plants and trees. Timber cruising. Logging. Cataloging insects. Evaluating wildlife habitat. Analyzing forest health. Creating strong leaders.

Ford Center and Forest is a living lab that provides educational opportunities for all ages. It is a vital component of our undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the MTU College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science as well as a valuable means of community education.

Academic Field Courses

Several creditable courses including Forestry and Environmental Resource Management Program (FERM), take place in the Center’s surrounding forests and wetlands. Nearly one-eighth of the CFRES undergraduate curriculum is taught at the Ford Center and Forest.

LeaderShape

The goal is simple, but intense: show bright young leaders how to step forward with strength and integrity. To find out who they are, so they can actively determine who they will be. The week-long interactive institute is hosted at the Ford Center. (No longer a full week check with them?) Solicit pictures also

Outreach Programs

It’s not only Michigan Tech that takes advantage of our facilities. Boy Scouts, youth camps, local schools, and other community groups have all visited for learning and play.

Professional Education

The Ford Center specializes in facilitating classes, seminars, camps, and training sessions offered by fellow educational organizations such as the MSU Extension. Professionals develop skills and others are trained in specialized fields such as forestry where we help industry and individuals learn chainsaw safety, log scaling and grading, logging, and logging safety. Natural resource workshops such as ANR North as well as other Department of Natural Resources sessions help educate faraway visitors and local residents alike about the environment around us.
