May through July, 2011 - Annual Review: The entire Handbook was reviewed and revised. To reflect current University titles and practice, MTU is now Michigan Tech, Executive Vice President and Provost is now Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, and the email address for questions is now hbwebmaster@mtu.edu. 1.4.1 Departmental Charters Senate Proposal 16-92 was replaced by Proposal 5-11, "Required Charter Contents."
1.4.2 Faculty Handbook Revision Process The original proposal stated "Once per year, modified or new sections of the Handbook will be sent to all faculty" and this statement now reads "Once per year, modified or new sections of the Handbook will be made, and a summary of the changes can be found on the Revision Summary List. An announcement of the completed annual review process will be given in Tech Today with a link to the Revision Summary List". The section was updated to include the full content of Proposal 11-94.
1.4.3 Developing Academic Policy at Michigan Tech Removed the word "normally" from the first sentence, titles have been changed to reflect current circumstances at Michigan Tech. "Board of Control Policy Manual" is now "Board of Control Bylaws and Policies Manual", "Exec V-P/Provost" is now "Provost/VP Acad Affairs", "MTU Procedures Manual" is now "University Policy and Procedures Manual" and "President's Cabinet" is now "Executive Team",
1.5.3 Graduate Faculty Status In Item C. the sentence "Recommendation for Graduate Faculty status is made in writing by the department chair of the appropriate academic unit or by the deans of the Schools of Business and Forestry" now reads "Recommendation for Graduate Faculty status is made in writing by the department chair of the appropriate academic unit or by the deans of the appropriate School."
2. Tenure, Promotion, and Reappointment Preamble Added the word "Appendix" to the link for Appendix I.
2.1 Reappointment Changed appointment date examples from 1996-97 through 2002-03 to 2011-12 through 2017-18.

2.4 Transfer of Tenure and Rank Between Academic Units Deleted the first paragraph [In academic year 2005, the Senate Academic Policy Committee introduced a proposal similar to this one on the floor of the University Senate. That proposal was tabled because at the time it appeared that it would no longer be a Senate issue and that it would be dealt with by the AAUP. However, as negotiations proceed, it appears that those issues dealing with shared governance and that have traditionally been within the responsibility of the Senate will largely remain the responsibility of the Senate, with salaries and wages and benefits being likely notable exceptions. Rather, the current thinking seems to be to protect the departmental/school Charters and Senate policies through language within the AAUP contract, while avoiding as much as possible the inclusion there of the details. Hence, this proposal once again comes to the Senate, but as a new proposal.]; with the deletion of section 2.3 For Future Use renumbered the remaining sections and 2.5. Transfer of Tenure and Rank Between Academic Units is now 2.4 Transfer of Tenure and Rank Between Academic Units.
3.1.2.1 Policy on Discrimination and Harassment Added "genetic information" as a form of discrimination.
3.1.4 Laboratory and Classroom Safety Safety Committee is now Department Safety Committee, Human Subjects-Internal Review Board is now Institutional Human Subjects Committee, added Institutional Biosafety Committee; the sentence: "If radioisotopes or regulated radiation producing machines are used, the person in charge must be listed on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission license held on this campus." now reads: "If radioisotopes or regulated radiation producing machines are used, the person in charge must be listed on the appropriate license held by Occupational Safety and Health Services."; the second paragraph stating: "Radioactive materials, controlled substances, infectious materials, and certain hazardous materials are not to be brought onto the campus without prior approval of the appropriate committee.", now reads: "Radioactive materials, controlled substances, infectious materials, and other regulated or highly hazardous materials are not to be brought onto the campus without prior approval of the appropriate committee. 4.1 Sabbatical Leave Program To reflect Board Policy 6.7, added the last sentence "This policy shall be administered in accordance with procedures recommended by the Senate and approved by the President."
4.4 Travel Policies - From Item A, the sentence "It is the employee's responsibility to cancel reservations by 6 p.m. local time of the hotel, or earlier if required" now reads "It is the employee's responsibility to cancel reservations by the required time of the hotel";
- The sentence "If there is a chance that arrival will be later than 6 p.m., employees should request a guaranteed late arrival reservation on their credit card" now reads "If there is a chance that arrival will be later than the required check-in time, employees should request a guaranteed late arrival reservation on their credit card."
- From item H, deleted "Employees who have a University calling card should use it for business calls. To receive a University calling card, call Information Technology Telecommunication Support, phone 2800." and "The University calling card may be used for these calls."
- From item L, the sentence "All international travel must have the prior approval of the President" now reads "All international travel must have the prior approval of the Dean/Department Chair/Director or higher in the supervisory chain-of-command."
4.4.1 American Express Corporate Card "Department chair" is now "department chair/director or dean (as applicable)".
4.4.2 Travel on Purchasing Card Deleted 4.4.2 Ameritech Call Card section and added 4.4.2 Travel on Purchasing Card.
4.5 Conferences The sentence "Such activities foster personal development and also bring national recognition to the University" now reads "Such activities foster personal development and also bring national and international recognition to the University."
4.6 Awards Added the Bhakta Rath Research Award, the Faculty Distinguished Service Award, and the Fredrick D. Williams Instructional Innovation Award; added professor of practice and lecturer to Distinguished Teacher Award.
5.1.2 Academic Time "Release Time" is now "Academic Time."
5.2.1 Summer Teaching "Director of Education Opportunities" is now "Provost Office".
5.3.2 Payroll Deductions Removed the sentence regarding savings bonds may be deducted and general editorial changes were also made.
5.3.3 Paycheck Direct Deposit Added a link to payroll website.
6.1.1 TechSelect Rewritten for more clarity and made into two paragraphs. The sentence "In addition, you must notify the Manager of Benefits within 30 days of any family status changes" is now "In addition, you must notify the Benefits Office within 30 days of any family status changes".
6.2.2 Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) Included link to FMLA policy.
6.2.3.2 Holidays The sentences "In addition, the University may declare other days not to exceed four for the year, as holidays. Presently this includes the day preceding New Year's Day, the date preceding Christmas and the day following Thanksgiving, one half day for Good Friday and one-half day for K-day." are now "In addition, the University offers three other days as holidays.
