ESC Student Travel Grants

The Ecosystem Science Center (ESC) provides student travel grants to increase visibility of ESC research and provide students with research presentation and professional development experiences.

Eligibility:

  • The student’s primary advisor is an eligible ESC member under the current GLRC institute membership policy.
  • The subject of the student's presentation must be on an ESC relevant topic.
  • Presentations must occur at a national or international scientific conference, meeting, or workshop.
  • Acceptance to present a talk or poster must be received at the time of application.
  • Students  are eligible to receive one travel grant per undergraduate degree, one per master’s degree, and two per PhD degree.

Award Requirements:

  • Posters and oral presentations given in conjunction with ESC funded travel should formally acknowledge support from the Ecosystem Science Center and display the ESC logo. A GLRC logo should also be included on the poster or presentation. Download logo from the GLRC Institute webpage under “Member Resources.”
  • After returning, students must process an MTU Travel Expense Report (TER) to document expenses and get reimbursed. Please save travel receipts, and work with your advisor and department coordinator to process this form. Forward a copy of the processed TER to glrcadmin-l@mtu.edu to trigger the transfer of awarded funds to your advisor's IRAD/Index no later than two weeks after travel is completed.
  • Email a PDF version of your presentation or poster to the GLRC Admin Team at glrcadmin-l@mtu.edu. Along with your PDF, please include a brief description of the conference or workshop and any photos taken. Your work may be featured on the electronic showcase in the GLRC or shared on our social media platforms.
  • Funded students will be required to participate in the annual ESC poster forum.

Application Process:

Students may request up to  $1,000 for allowable travel expenses per MTU policies, including, airfare, mileage, meals, lodging, and registration.

Students can apply at any time, but grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will be reviewed at the end of each month. Applications must be submitted a minimum of two weeks in advance of the planned travel.
