Military Family Education Award (MFEA)

Criteria: New incoming non-residents, or non-resident current students who are a child of an active duty service member (as defined by Title 10 US Code below) and under the age of 24. Spouses of an active duty member of a Uniformed Service (as defined by Title 10 US Code) also qualify for the award.

How to Apply: Eligible students must meet the uniformed service requirement-see the More Information section for details. New incoming first-year Students can indicate eligibility through the admission application process or by contacting the admissions office at 888-688-1885 or mtu4u@mtu.edu. Currently enrolled undergraduate students should contact the Registrar's Office to be considered for the MFEA. Previously awarded assistance may be reduced or cancelled for enrolled MFEA recipients.

Value: Equal to the difference between nonresident and resident tuition.

More Information 

The uniformed service requirement as defined by Title 10 US Code includes:

  • Air Force
  • Army
  • Coast Guard
  • Marines
  • Navy
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Commissioned Corps (NOAA Corps)
  • United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps (PHSCC)

National Guard and Reserve members activated for 365 days or greater

Currently enrolled undergraduate students with this Uniformed Service relationship may petition the university scholarship committee for MFEA consideration. Previously awarded assistance may be reduced or cancelled for enrolled MFEA recipients.

Duration: This award will remain with the student for the entirety of their undergraduate education so long as they remain in good academic and disciplinary standing, even if the active duty status of the family member changes.

Exclusion: Recipients of the MFEA are not eligible for other institutional general fund awards such as the National Scholars Program or Alumni Legacy Award. They are, however, eligible for need based aid and/or private scholarship funds.

Verification: Verification includes presenting Official Orders or a valid Military ID card to Michigan Tech's Admissions Office prior to the beginning of classes.
