Space Modifications & New Installations

Building occupants may personalize their department workspaces, offices, and public spaces. The use of damage-free adhesive strips, self adhesive velcro, and similar products can be good alternatives to using nails, screws and other fasteners. Occupants should not drill or hammer fasteners into building walls to prevent damage to building infrastructure. Faculty, staff, and students requiring assistance with hanging photos, plaques, and other common decor may request assistance by submitting a work request. Work requests will typically be reviewed by department staff within 24 hours.  Work orders are assigned on a first come, first served basis. Requests for hanging personal items, fixtures, and  similar items are typically chargeable to the requesting department. Please see Billing for more information related to service fees.

More significant changes to or improvements to interior spaces generally requires additional planning and coordination. Departments should consider aesthetic improvements when spaces are vacated, renovated, or transitioned to a new use. Requesting a review with department staff prior to the changes might assist with addressing cleaning or maintenance issues. Minor maintenance projects, such as painting, flooring, and window treatments can typically be self-performed or contracted by the department. Voluntary improvements will typically be charged to the requesting department; however, each project is unique and the timing of previous updates and improvements may be a factor in funding eligibility.

Proposed renovations and additions to building spaces are required to follow the University’s Capital Project Planning Process. The process generally involves conceptualizing the project and coordinating project development with Planning and Construction. Projects typically fall into one of the following categories:

  • Minor Project Requests are assigned to a project manager who estimates the cost of the project and communicates that with the project requester.
  • Capital Project Planning Forms are reviewed annually by the President's Council and a representative from Facilities Management.
  • Off-Cycle Capital Project Requests are handled on a case-by-case basis and the review process is a hybrid of the above two processes.
