Portable fire extinguishers are installed across the campus and tested as required by the National Fire Protection Association. It is not permitted to install your own extinguishers. Annual maintenance is performed by certified inspectors, and monthly checks are done by building mechanics.
Contact EHS if:
1) You find the extinguisher(s) due for annual or monthly inspections
2) Discharged extinguisher for any reasons
3) You feel the need for additional fire extinguishers for your work location
4) You have other concerns regarding fire safety
Refer to the guideline for safety showers and eyewashes installation.
Safety showers and eye washes are tested annually by the building mechanic. You need
to test eye washes in your workplace at least monthly.
Annual inspections by ALI-certified inspectors are required by the ANSI for automotive lifts (ANSI/ALI ALCTV:2011). MIOSHA also follows the standard (refer to standard R408.17252 for automotive lift inspections). The owner's department is responsible for arranging and paying for the inspection.
Submit the copy of the inspection report to EHS.
Currently EHS is not coordinating campus visits due to the limited number of interests from departments.
Contact EHS if you'd like to discuss the future coordination plan.
Annual inspections by certified inspectors are required by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standard 1910.179 for overhead and gantry cranes. Monthly inspections are also required for those in regular use (not idling for more than 6 months)
The owner's department is responsible for arranging and paying for the inspection.
Submit the copy of the inspection report to EHS.
There is an EHS coordinates visit of qualified inspectors for the ones listed in our
inventory.
Contact EHS if you have crane(s) and would like to be added to the list.
MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms) or aerial lifts include a variety of elevated platforms used on campus, such as scissor lifts and boom lifts.
There are inspection and training requirements (ANSI/SAIA A92.22 and A92.24, adapted to MIOSHA part 58) for these lifts.
The owner's department is responsible for arranging and paying for the inspection
and providing training to lift operators.
Submit the copy of the inspection report and training records to EHS.
EH&S is working to schedule a coordinated inspection visit for 2026.
Submit the form if you would like to include your lifts for the coordinated inspection visits.
Also contact EH&S for training arrangements.
MIOSHA requires that employees be provided the opportunity to receive medical consultation
and examination whenever they develop signs and symptoms of chemical overexposure,
MIOSHA regulated substances are measured above the Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL),
or whenever an event takes place such as a spill or leak resulting in the likelihood
of hazardous exposure.
We are proud to announce that EHS is available to coordinate a monitoring program
that proactively assesses and supports the health of employees. This is for the laboratory
members who may be exposed to hazardous chemicals during the course of their laboratory
work.
Laboratory managers who wish to assess the chemical exposure level of your group members,
contact EHS to arrange monitoring.
Note that lab managers or departments are responsible for covering the monitoring
cost.
EHS will work with lab managers to implement corrective measures if any exposures
are found to exceed established action levels.
AEDs on campus are routinely maintained by EMS and EH&S.
Contact EHS when departments wish to purchase additional AEDs or have any other AED-related inquiries.
Fume hood flow rates are tested at least annually. Contact EHS if your fume hoods are due for testing or any changes require flow rate evaluation.
Biological safety cabinets need to be certified by a qualified inspector when they are installed/relocated and annually. EHS is coordinating the visit of inspectors. Contact EHS if you install the biological safety cabinet and for annual inspections.
