- Climate Adaptation Specialist, NIACS
Biography
Maddy is a Climate Adaptation Specialist with Michigan Technological University and the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science. Since joining NIACS in 2020, she has enjoyed working with a variety of audiences and partners to integrate climate change adaptation into their land management planning efforts. Maddy also coordinates NIACS' Urban and Community Forestry adaptation services.
Maddy is passionate about the intersections between climate adaptation, forest management, and community engagement and equity. She completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan's School of Environment and Sustainability, and her Master's in Forest Conservation at the University of Toronto. For her graduate capstone, she developed a community science initiative called the Assisted Tree Range Expansion Project (ATREP). Based in Northwest lower Michigan, the project engages people in planting and monitoring tree species that are projected to have suitable new habitat in the region under future climate conditions (based on modelling results from the USDA Forest Service Climate Change Tree Atlas).
