With a Michigan Tech Accelerated Master's in Data Science (BS-MS, BA-MS) degree, you'll be ready with both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in Data Science. This five-year, full-time pathway is open to strong, motivated Michigan Tech undergraduate students.

A Coursework Degree

The Master of Science in Data Science is a course-work only degree option requiring completion of 30 credits of approved courses. In the accelerated master's program, Michigan Tech undergraduates can count up to 6 approved credits toward both the master's program and an undergraduate degree program.

Admissions Requirements

All bachelor’s degree seeking students from Michigan Tech with a cumulative graduating GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to enter the Accelerated Master’s in Data Science Program.

Undergraduate students must apply for admission to the accelerated master’s program though the standard Graduate School application process during the latter part of their junior year or early in their senior year. Interested students should talk with the Director of Data Science during their junior year.

Students already enrolled in a graduate program may not retroactively enroll in the Accelerated Master’s in Data Science Program.

Course Credits

  • The Accelerated Master’s in Data Science degree requires 30 credits of approved coursework.
  • All coursework must be completed within 5 years from admission to the Michigan Tech. Graduate School and the Accelerated Master’s in Data Science Program.
  • Under Senior Rule, a student may take up to 10 credit hours of the credits toward the Accelerated Master’s in Data Science degree while an undergraduate. Senior Rule credits are independent of double-counted credits.
  • All dual-counted courses applied to the Accelerated Master’s in Data Science degree must have a grade of B or higher. Please see the official policy for a list of courses that can be dually counted.

GPA

Only students in good academic standing, as defined by the Graduate School, are eligible to enter the Accelerated MS program. Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale).

Advising

Upon acceptance, each student must meet with the data science graduate program director to document the specific double-counted courses and allowed senior rule courses. The student will also be assigned an academic advisor to craft a coursework plan for graduation.
