If you believe a housing-related charge (e.g., for cleaning, damages, or other fees) was added to your account in error, you may appeal it within 30 days of the email notification.
Step 1: Submit an Initial Appeal
-
What to do: Write a brief letter explaining why the charge is incorrect.
-
Where to send it: Email your letter to housing@mtu.edu.
-
Be sure to include supporting documentation, such as photos showing pre-existing damage and a signed statement from a roommate accepting responsibility.
Next Steps
Your appeal will be forwarded to the appropriate staff based on your housing assignment.
You’ll receive a decision via your Michigan Tech email within 10 business days.
Step 2: Request a Secondary Review (If Needed)
Proceed only if:
-
You have new documentation that wasn’t available during your initial appeal, or
-
There are extenuating circumstances that weren’t considered earlier
-
What to do: Email your request for a secondary review to housingappeal@mtu.edu.
-
What happens next: The Housing Appeals Committee will review your full case, including your first appeal.
Final Decision
The committee’s decision is final and will be emailed to your Michigan Tech account within 10 business days.
