Residential Building Services

Facilities Management maintains and provides custodial and maintenance services for the campus residence halls and apartment buildings. Whether daily, annual, or seasonal deep-cleaning, our mission is to enhance the student experience by creating and caring for residential facilities.

Residence Hall

Residence Hall Services

Custodial services may vary by building and room in a residential setting. Generally, common areas such as lounges, hallways, stairwells, kitchenettes, and bathrooms are cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis by Custodial Services staff, while residents are responsible for cleaning their individual rooms. Dining halls, vending, commercial kitchens, and similar food service areas are cleaned and maintained by Dining Services staff. The following provides a general description of the services provided by custodial staff in campus residence halls.

  • Common spaces like building entrances, lobbies, hallways, locker rooms, and bathrooms may be cleaned multiple times a day, depending on usage.
  • Custodial Services cleans common residence hall bathrooms and shower facilities once a day, with a thorough deep cleaning conducted weekly.
  • Kitchenettes are cleaned daily with attention given to floors, countertops, tables/chairs, trash removal, touchpoints, and general sanitization.
  • Offices are cleaned every two weeks with attention given to floors, windowsills, trash removal, touchpoints, and general sanitization. Staff will clean readily accessible surfaces and will not move/displace personal items in an office. Staff does not erase or clean white boards in staff offices.

Hillside Place offers a unique living environment that is similar to the residence halls, yet includes many independent living features. Residents living in Hillside Place are expected to clean and maintain their main living area, defined as the kitchen, living room, and bathrooms. Custodial staff cleans building common spaces, corridors, and similar public areas.

Daniel Heights Apartments

Apartment Services

Located along Woodmar Drive, Daniell Heights provides one, two, and three bedroom apartments to University students. Each unit is complete with a kitchen, private bathroom, bedroom(s) and living room.

The apartments in Daniell Heights are semi-furnished.  Each bedroom is furnished with one bed, one desk, one chair, and one set of drawers. One bedroom apartments also have a couch, an end table and stools for countertop dining. Two bedroom apartments are furnished with a couch, a soft chair, an end table, table with chairs for dining, and appliances.

Residents are responsible for cleaning and maintaining their own apartments and furnishings. Custodial staff provides annual cleaning and sanitation of unoccupied apartments.  Facilities staff provides "supplemental" cleaning of common spaces; however, the cleanliness of common spaces in the apartments are ultimately the responsibility of the tenants, as outlined in their housing contract. This includes maintaining the cleanliness of laundry rooms. Facilities provides supplemental cleaning on a less frequent basis. Tenants are also responsible for shoveling the sidewalks to their building; shovels are provided for this purpose. Grounds staff will also perform snow removal and apply ice melt as staffing and time permit—typically within 1–2 business days following a significant snowfall.

Since tenants are responsible for cleaning and maintenance, it’s important to document any damage or deficiencies observed in the apartment. The contract holder will be held responsible for damage to the apartments and furnishings, beyond normal “wear and tear”.  Upon vacating a unit, tenants are responsible for cleaning and returning the unit back to move-in conditions.
