All University researchers, scientists, and staff have a role to play regarding laboratory safety on campus. Facilities Management supports laboratories, shops, and similar learning environments by providing regular cleaning and sanitation services. Custodial staff will wipe and disinfect door handles and light switches. Trash containers are emptied and liners replaced if necessary. Paper towel and soap dispensers are refilled as needed.
Custodial services in laboratories are provided as follows:
-
Learning Centers - Custodial staff cleans touchpoints and floors on a daily basis.
-
Teaching Labs - Custodial staff cleans touchpoints and floors on a daily basis.
-
Open Labs - Custodial staff cleans touchpoints and floors, and empties trash receptacles on a weekly basis.
Because of the potential for unforeseen hazards associated with lab usage, custodians will not touch chairs, work benches, equipment, supplies, computers, personal items, or any lab research items. Laboratory personnel are responsible for cleaning horizontal surfaces, counter tops, furnishings, and fixtures.
