Staff working in Custodial Services in the University’s academic buildings are responsible for cleaning and sanitizing a variety of environments and interior spaces. Staff may be working in a teaching laboratory, a graduate student lounge, a restroom, or a typical classroom. Regardless of the work location, staff is expected to provide a clean indoor environment that is free of trash, debris, dust, allergens, bacteria/viruses and any other organisms or materials that may be detrimental to the health and well-being of the building, its occupants, or the custodial staff.
The following outline some of the core services provided by Custodial Services as well as performance expectations for providing consistent and high-quality work.
Offices
Offices are cleaned every two weeks with attention given to floors, windowsills, trash removal, touchpoints, and general sanitization. Staff will clean readily accessible surfaces and will not move/displace personal items in an office. Office cleaning services are dependent on the availability to perform the work. Congested office spaces with large amounts of furniture and personal items will greatly affect our ability to provide a detailed service. Staff does not erase or clean white boards in offices. Office occupants are responsible for emptying deskside trash and recycling bins.
Public Spaces
Regular disinfection of high-touch surfaces such as doorknobs, elevator buttons, light switches, handrails, and water fountains are a priority for cleaning and sanitization.
Public areas such as stairwells and corridors are cleaned regularly to ensure a healthy and pleasant environment for building occupants and visitors. Floors are swept, mopped, or vacuumed regularly depending on the type of flooring (e.g., tile, carpet, or hardwood). Seasonal conditions, for example the tracking of slush, sand, and salt into building entrances, requires higher cleaning frequency to ensure that buildings are safe and accessible.
Trash and recycling bins in common spaces are emptied during regular cleaning intervals. Trash and recycling in offices are the responsibility of the office occupant. Centrally located trash and recycling bins are placed in strategic locations in all campus buildings. Office occupants are expected to bring their office waste to these locations between cleanings.
Classrooms & Lecture Halls
Classrooms and lecture halls are cleaned daily, with attention given to desks, floors, trash removal, touchpoints, and general sanitization. White boards, chalk boards, and similar fixtures are wiped down regularly. Floors are swept/mopped and/or carpet and walkways vacuumed. All desktops, and chairs are wiped and disinfected.
Cleaning standards emphasize the use of EPA-approved disinfectants to kill viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens. This is especially critical during seasonal Influenza (flu) outbreaks or in response to other public health concerns, including illnesses like Norovirus or Mononucleosis.
Lounges, Breakrooms & Kitchenettes
Touch points in lounges, breakrooms, and kitchenettes will be wiped and disinfected on a daily basis. Trash containers will be emptied and liners replaced. Custodial staff will wipe and disinfect open surfaces. Paper towels and soap dispensers will be refilled as needed. Outside surfaces of appliances, countertops, and sinks will be wiped clean and disinfected. Floors are swept/mopped, and/or vacuumed. Users of shared appliances in kitchenettes, such as refrigerators and microwaves, are expected to clean up after themselves if they cause a mess. Facilities will provide supplemental cleaning of appliances on a seasonal or infrequent basis, depending on usage.
