Biography

Since joining the College of Business in 2003, Mari Buche has immersed herself in campus and community life, including actively participating in community service through the Houghton Rotary Club (president 2007-08). She has served as advisor to various student organizations, such as Association of IT Professionals (AITP), the Houghton-Hancock Rotaract Club, Beta Gamma Sigma honor society in business, and Alpha Gamma Delta. She was elected to serve on the Provost Search Committee (2009) and was SBE Senate Alternate for 3 years. In addition to her professional responsibilities, Mari supports Michigan Tech’s athletes by loudly cheering on the Huskies at hockey, basketball, football, and volleyball. Two of her fondest achievements are being recognized as a finalist for the Michigan Tech 2008 Distinguished Teaching Award and receiving the College of Business Teaching Awards in 2005, 2012, and 2014.

Research Focus

What does it mean to be titled “systems analyst”, when you were hired as a “programmer”? And, if you do not make the transition to “systems analyst”, what will you inadvertently do to your career? These questions motivate Dr. Buche’s research — to investigate the radical impact of changes in technology and information systems on the professionals intimately involved in developing, implementing, and supporting those systems.

Dr. Buche and other MIS researchers are also working to provide recommendations to improve the gender balance in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
