The Power of Social Media
Michigan Tech has developed MTU Social Media Guidelines, a Social Media Policy, and an Official Social Media Account (OSA) Application. These resources are intended to ensure that social media interactions on OSAs serve the best interest of the University. All social media accounts recognized by Michigan Tech will be listed in the MTU Social Media Directory after completing the OSA application form.
Apply now to have your Michigan Tech social media accounts recognized as OSAs. To ensure that the Social Media Directory stays up to date, applications must be submitted for both existing and proposed social media accounts.
Become an Official Social Media Account
All social media accounts that speak on behalf of the University; represent a University entity, unit, or department; or are administered or managed by University personnel, and are included in the MTU Social Media Directory maintained by University Marketing and Communications(UMC), are considered official social media accounts.
Social media accounts representing student-run clubs or organizations or personal social media accounts set up by any Michigan Tech student, faculty, or staff member for individual use are not considered official accounts.
A social media admin can apply for OSA status by completing the Official Social Media Account (OSA) Application form. After the application is approved, the account will be added to the social media directory.
Join the MTU Social Media Admin Community
Social media admins (SMAs) at Michigan Tech are part of a group of creatives sharing impactful stories about the University. SMAs connect with one another to share best practices, collaborate on campaigns, and support each other's efforts. Together, SMAs amplify Tech's impact and make a significant difference in how the University is perceived, both locally and globally.
Getting Started Checklist
- Fill out the social media application to have your Michigan Tech accounts be recognized as official social media accounts
(OSAs) in the MTU Social Media Directory. This application also asks SMAs to confirm
that they have read and understood the University's Social Media Policy and Guidelines.
- Ensure the security of your social media accounts by using a password management system
such as LastPass. LastPass is free for each student, faculty, and staff with a Michigan Tech email account.
UMC recommends creating a LastPass account using the email address of an MTU department,
program, or entity instead of a personal MTU email address. This makes it easy to
share credentials if needed during a transition of roles.
- Ask your MTU entity leadership for communications priorities and then determine content
goals by choosing three to five content buckets/posting themes (for example: student
stories, campus life, research, etc.).
- Begin drafting a content calendar for the upcoming month/year based on your content
buckets (for example: three posts per month about student life and/or three posts
per month about research).
- Create your content in line with best practices and the Michigan Tech Brand Guide. We’re thrilled to have you join us and look forward to seeing the creative and effective ways you’ll contribute to Michigan Tech’s social media presence!
