LinkedIn

LinkedIn is designed for professional networking, allowing users to showcase their professional experiences, connect with colleagues, engage in thought leadership, and follow industry trends on their personal pages. Social media admins (SMAs) utilize LinkedIn Company Pages for their organizations, sharing updates, milestones, thought leadership, rankings, and job listings. Features like LinkedIn posts, long-form articles, polls, and events help businesses enhance their professional presence on this platform.

Michigan Tech uses LinkedIn to engage alumni, community partners, and the broader professional Michigan Tech network, with a focus on research, academics, and thought leadership, and a sprinkling of campus life. LinkedIn content should enhance brand prestige, foster alumni engagement, drive meaningful interactions, and support Tech’s institutional goals.

LinkedIn accounts are reserved for specific campus entities, departments, and programs. If you’d like to start a LinkedIn Company Page for your MTU-affiliated group, please reach out to social@mtu.edu.

Key Elements

Professional Tone

LinkedIn can be a more formal platform, so the caption should reflect a level of professionalism and have a tie to academics. Focus on highlighting achievements, opportunities, or events in a polished but not robotic way. After all, our audience is human.

Example Idea

Start with a quote from a researcher and tag the researcher in the post if they have a personal account on LinkedIn.

Copy Example

“Tech researcher @Jared Wolfe in the @College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science at Michigan Tech has set out to help the declining bird populations in the Amazon rainforest.🦉🦜”

Link and Call to Action

When writing LinkedIn captions, always try to include a link your audience can follow. This gives them more information while also bringing them back to the MTU website.

Example Call to Action

“Discover what’s happening with birds in the rainforest and what researchers think can be done to protect them in the latest Unscripted Research Blog. https://lnkd.in/dCkM-ZSZ”

Hashtags

Use one to three industry-related hashtags that are relevant to your content. Example hashtags: #RainforestResearch #ClimateResearch #AmazonRainforest

Tagging

Tag any relevant organizations, departments, or key people.

Example

"Michigan Tech’s College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science is excited to be working with @Science Advances on breakthrough rainforest bird research.”

Visuals

Use professional, high-resolution imagery or an on-brand MTU graphic. LinkedIn visuals should be polished, informative, and engaging.

Content Tip

Look into the built-in features on LinkedIn, such as polls, video, events, or in-platform articles. More often than not, social media platforms will reward accounts for using platform features by boosting their posts in the algorithm.
