This checklist is meant to help guide Social Media Admins (SMAs) at Michigan Tech change over information on social media platforms in the event that their unit/department/program undergoes a name change at the University.
Pre-Update Preparation
- Official Announcement
- Prepare an official statement about the name change.
- Obtain approvals from necessary stakeholders (administration, marketing, etc.).
- Set a date and time for the official announcement.
- Update Branding Materials
- Design new logos, banners, and profile images reflecting the new name.
- Update any relevant templates for social media posts.
- If needed, create a new email to match the new name of the entity.
- Audit Current Social Media Presence
- Make a list of all social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, etc.).
- Identify all profiles, pages, groups, and handles that need updating.
Social Media Platform Updates
- Facebook
- Update the page name and handle.
- Update profile and cover photos.
- Post an announcement about the name change.
- Update “About” section with new name and any other relevant information.
- Update new email address to be associated with the platform or the contact us section.
- X (Twitter)
- Change the username (handle) and display name.
- Update profile and header images.
- Tweet an announcement about the name change.
- Update bio with the new name.
- Update new email address to be associated with the platform or the contact us section.
- Instagram
- Update the username and display name.
- Change profile picture.
- Post an announcement about the name change.
- Update bio with new name and relevant links.

- Continue updating any remaining materials or platforms.
