What does it mean to be an EV Scholar?
EV Scholars are students at selected universities in Michigan with unique access to events, programming, and scholarships related to careers in the EV and mobility tech industry. Specific programs vary by campuses, but generally include seminars, networking events, and internships with Michigan companies focused on electric vehicles and batteries.

2023-2024 EV Scholars:
- are interested in a career as an Electrical Engineer or Software Developer
- are undergraduate students with a declared, or intent to declare, relevant major (e.g. Engineering, Computer Science).
- want to learn more about the EV and mobility tech industry.
- agree to participate in all of the required EV Scholars activities.
For fall 2023 scholarships, the EV Scholar must receive and accept a job offer as an Electrical Engineer or Software Developer with a participating employer in Michigan on or after September 1, 2023.
EV Scholarships are awarded to students accepting internships or jobs with participating employers on a first come first serve basis. Specifically:
- $5,000 will be awarded to junior-level students who accept an internship with an EV Scholar employer in MI and commit to completing the full internship.
- $10,000 will be awarded to senior-level students who accept a full time position with an EV Scholar employer in MI and commit to remaining in the role for one year.
- For Seniors who received a previous award as a Junior, an additional $5,000 will be awarded if they accept a full time position with an EV Scholar employer in MI and commit to remaining in the role for one year.
- Please note that the addition of this scholarship may result in adjustments to previously awarded financial aid.
In general, EV Scholar students will:
- Manage their job application and interview process directly with the employer. (EV Scholars does not facilitate the actual job application process.)
- Formally accept the job or internship offer with the employer.
- Report acceptance of the offer to the career services office and the EV Scholars program coordinator.
- Sign a Letter of Intent stating acceptance of the role and intent to meet the scholarship's requirements.
- Once the above steps are completed, funds will be disbursed (on a first come first serve basis) through the University's scholarship office.
Exact timing should be clarified with the scholarship office, but typically once your eligibility has been verified through the process outlined above, your school will disburse the funds to your student account as quickly as possible.
Yes. Seniors who received the scholarship as a junior are eligible for an additional $5,000 award if they accept a second internship or a full time role with a participating EV Scholar employer. The offer can be from the employer they interned with, or from another participating employer.
A student may receive up to $10,000, either through a single grant, or through two scholarships of $5,000 each. Please note that the addition of this scholarship may result in adjustments to previously awarded financial aid.
As long as the accepted job or internship is with a Core Employer, located in the state of Michigan, in an Electrical Engineer or Software Developer position, it is eligible for the scholarship. The core employer group of companies with operations in Michigan have been critical partners in designing the EV Scholars program, and they have committed to working and investing resources towards the future of the industry (including EVs), thus not every role will be immediately applicable to EVs.
Yes. International students are welcome and encouraged to participate in EV Scholar industry programming. Eligibility to apply for individual internship and full time positions will be dependent on individual employers.
