Strategic Investment, Strong Returns

Dean Johnson, dean of the College of Business, leads caring faculty and spearheads innovative programs with a STEM-infused focus that can only be found at Michigan Tech.

The College of Business at Michigan Tech has never been more visible—and it's more than our new entrance signage. We're opening the doors of opportunity wide for students focused on future-proof business careers.

We've always known that being part of a STEM-focused university is an advantage. After 95-plus years of offering tech-focused business courses, we've noticed that other institutions that offer business degrees are finally catching on.

But here's the thing—we're not stopping our forward momentum. Embedded in Michigan's premier technological university, which this year received R1 designation for quality and quantity of research, we'll continue to lead the pack. We're embracing artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and other technologies that have a direct effect on the ability of our students to continue the leadership they've cultivated here as they step into the careers of tomorrow.

Defined by our unique position at the intersection of technology and business, the College of Business is also strengthened by our faculty. They bring fresh perspectives and approaches to teaching and research, benefiting our students and the wider Michigan Tech community. Students consistently tell us that our faculty is a major reason why they chose Michigan Tech—and why they stay.

As we look to the future, the ability to position our students for even greater success will also take the form of a new shared facility with the College of Computing. Known as the Center for Convergence and Innovation (CCI), this University-led initiative will accelerate new partnerships that position Michigan Tech and the State of Michigan as leaders in digital transformation. We've already established three new centers of excellence to catalyze collaboration between business and computing faculty.

Closer on the horizon is the continued development of the College of Business as an entrepreneurial hub for the Michigan Tech campus and beyond. It's a natural fit, considering the many pitch contests, project competitions, and experiential learning programs that we foster, including one of the longest-running hands-on learning experiences on campus: the Applied Portfolio Management Program (APMP). On the cusp of its third decade, APMP has been transformational for generations of students. You'll hear from some of them in this issue, along with stories of challenges met by outstanding Huskies across our degree programs. It's been my privilege to get to know all of them, push some of them, and watch so many of them turn into extraordinary alumni who continue to cherish their close ties to Tech.

These exceptional opportunities, combined with an unparalleled technological edge, are why our Huskies get hired. This year, we're putting them front and center in our first College of Business Career Fair. Offered in addition to the University-wide event, our fair provides a valuable new asset to both employers and students. It's a strategic decision well worth the effort. Like every other aspect of the College of Business, we are doubling down on the investments we know will pay off—in business, in technology, in faculty, and most of all, in our students.

Celebrating 15 Years of Impact

Past issues of Impact Magazine spread out.

Since 2010, Impact has chronicled our continuous infusion of advanced technology into our degree programs, our enrollment growth, and our efforts to prepare Business Huskies for the careers of tomorrow. The magazine documents our shared history, connecting alumni, friends, and industry partners near and far. Now, we're excited to share that all past issues are easily accessible online.
