Sabbatical Leave Modifications

Beginning this academic year (2022-23), sabbatical leave applications for both tenure-track and instructional-track faculty will be a two-step process. These modifications follow Senate Proposal 15-22, “Proposed Change to Senate Procedure 706.1.1 Section 8 on Timing of Sabbatical Applications,” which the University Senate and Administration approved during April 2022.

The first step requires eligible faculty intending to apply for sabbatical leave to notify their supervisor, in writing, of their intent to apply for sabbatical leave. It is recognized that in many cases a faculty member may have a conversation with their supervisor before the written notification is submitted. Written notifications must be received by the supervisor no later than the first day of classes for spring semester, and for this academic year this date is Jan. 9.

The second step is the submission of the full application packet, which includes the supervisor’s recommendation, to the chair of the Sabbatical Leave Committee (with a copy to the provost’s office) by Feb. 1. Details related to the application packet, who is eligible for sabbatical leave, and the rubric for the committee’s review of eligible instructional-track applications can be found on the provost’s website.

'A Christmas Carol' Opens Tonight

Warm holiday memories arrive in the Keweenaw tonight through Sunday (Dec. 1-4) with "A Christmas Carol," written by Charles Dickens, adapted to the stage by Romulus Linney and presented by Michigan Tech Theatre.

The beloved holiday classic, directed by Trish Helsel, boasts a Tech Theatre Company cast of nearly 40 local youth, Keweenaw community members and Michigan Tech faculty, staff and students. "A Christmas Carol" will lift holiday spirits at the Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. tonight through Saturday, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday.

From the first “Bah, Humbug!” to the final, “God bless us, everyone,” this performance will delight audiences of all ages as they join Ebenezer Scrooge on his journey of transformation and redemption.

“The Charles Dickens classic has long been a Christmas favorite; the story is much more universal in its message,” says Helsel, professor of theatre at Michigan Tech. “I chose this stage adaptation because it does not paint Ebenezer Scrooge as a villain, but rather someone broken by a series of devastating life events. Our production focuses on Scrooge’s ability to accept his past and embrace the present.”

The strength of the Keweenaw community, its overwhelming artistic talent and phenomenal young people were at the forefront of Helsel’s mind as she chose this year’s holiday show. “The show was chosen as a community-centered production with a cast of Michigan Tech students, faculty and community members,” says Helsel. “It has been a pleasure to work with this lot of youngsters, who range in age from 4 to 17 years. It is exciting to be a part of their induction into a professional theatre setting. Children are such fast learners! They have picked up the British dialects with ease, and they memorize quickly. Most importantly, they bring a sense of joy to the process.”

Get tickets online, by calling 906-487-1906, at the Rozsa Box Office from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, or for one hour before shows. Michigan Tech students can reserve free Experience Tech tickets online, and Student Rush will be available at the door.

Details:

  • What: "A Christmas Carol," written by Charles Dickens, adapted to the stage by Romulus Linney
  • When: 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1-3 and 2 p.m. Dec. 4
  • Where: Rozsa Center for the Performing Arts
  • Cost: $20 Adults | $5 Youth Under 18 | Free Student Rush

Become Mental Health First Aid Certified

Faculty and staff are invited to an upcoming mental health first aid (MHFA) training opportunity.

Unlike physical conditions, symptoms of mental health and substance use problems can be difficult to detect. Friends, family members, peers or mentors may find it hard to know when and how to step in. As a result, those in need of mental health services often do not receive care until it is too late.

Just as CPR helps even those without clinical training assist an individual experiencing a physical health crisis, MHFA prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. Participants will learn a five-step action plan to guide them through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support.

This training follows a hybrid model, with two hours of pre-work (must be completed at least 48 hours in advance of in-person training) and about 6.5 hours of in-person training. The in-person portion of the training will take place Jan. 4 and 5 from 8:30 a.m. to noon each day. You must attend both portions of the course in their entirety to receive MHFA certification.

The cost per participant is $55 and covers all materials. Participants are responsible for the cost, whether through the participant directly or through their department.

For more information and to sign up, please see the sign-up form.

Please contact Sarah Dowd at sedowd@mtu.edu with any questions.

Michigan Tech Announces Football Leadership Change

Michigan Tech Athletic Director Suzanne Sanregret announced Tuesday (Nov. 29) that head football coach Steve Olson's contract has not been renewed. Associate head coach and offensive coordinator Dan Mettlach has been named the new head coach of the Huskies, effective immediately.

Olson recently completed his sixth season as the leader of the Huskies and held a 23-29 overall record and a 15-23 mark in GLIAC games. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under Olson, the Huskies have been honored 25 times with all-GLIAC first and second team awards, while Hayden Huttula (2021 AFCA First Team), Nate LaJoie (2019 Don Hansen First Team), and Jacob Wenzlick (2018 Don Hansen Third Team) were named All-Americans.

Olson was a defensive coordinator and linebacker's coach for the Black and Gold for the previous six seasons before being named the 16th head coach in program history on November 15, 2016.

"Steve is a person of great integrity, and he has worked tirelessly to fulfill the mission of our athletic department and university," said Sanregret. "He stepped in with big shoes to fill after Coach Kearly retired, and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank Michigan Tech for the opportunity to be a part of this school and program," Olson said. "During my time at Michigan Tech, we did not win as many games as I would have liked to have won. I am very proud of the accomplishments of the players who started and graduated from Michigan Tech. I wish the team the best of luck as it prepares for next season and beyond.

"Michigan Tech is a special place, with special people, and I value the time that I spent here."

BioSci Seminar with Dalton Norris

Dalton Norris will present as part of the Department of Biological Sciences (BioSci) Seminar Series from 2-3 p.m. today (Dec. 1) at the Great Lakes Research Center, GLRC 202, and virtually via Zoom

Norris's presentation is titled "Trophic ecology and mercury bioaccumulation among Lake Superior Lake Trout ecotypes."

From the abstract:
The Lake Superior lake trout population consists of siscowet, lean, humper and redfin ecological morphotypes or ‘ecotypes’. In addition to morphological differences, these ecotypes occupy different habitats in Lake Superior and partition various invertebrate and fish prey resources. In this study, I measured the stable isotopes of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) and mercury concentrations among these ecotypes collected from Lake Superior waters surrounding Isle Royale. Average mercury concentrations were highest for redfins (1389 ng/g dry wt) followed by siscowets (823 ng/g), humpers (799 ng/g) and leans (519 ng/g). Relationships between Hg concentrations and fish lengths differed significantly among ecotypes and were concluded to reflect the extent to which insect or fish prey dominate ecotype diets. Stable isotopes demonstrated that siscowets occupy the largest niche in Isle Royale waters with humpers occupying the smallest. This study emphasizes the role of ecology in regulating mercury bioaccumulation among these sympatric lake trout.
